This is a highly decorative box with a front facing dragon amongst colourful lotus flowers who is supporting a bowl of jewels and elephant tusks on his head, in the central cartouche. The field is filled with an elaborate kati rimo design, the latticework pattern typical of Chinese lampas brocades. The four corners are decorated with golden scrolls, and the border is a composition of polychrome clouds of differing sizes. Perhaps the most remarkable factor is the entire background which consists of small dots executed in kyung bur, the raised gesso technique, which are then gilded. |
