The front facing dragon at the centre and the golden scrolls at the corners and in the border are executed in kyung-bur, the raised gesso technique, and then painted with rag-dul, a Dutch gold made of brass powder and other metals. Between these scrolls in the border is an elaborate, wang-zi or continuous swastika pattern on a bright green background. These create a striking contrast with the plain cinnabar red of the field. It is usually difficult to determine the exact provinence of a box, but this one has the seal of Loseling, a College of Drepung Monastery, one of the three great Gelupa Monasteries near Lhasa.
