In the central cartouche of this "classic dragon box" is a side facing dragon, swirling amongst lotus flowers. Its mouth is open, the tongue is pointed and it seems to roar. Under the head is a claw with sharp nails clasping a round jewel. In the field is a kati rimo or lattice pattern, so popular on Chinese brocades of the Ming period. Golden scrolls, executed in raised gesso, or kyung-bur, mark the corners and flowers and clouds adorn the border. This box, with its excellent patina, has a dragon full of character and movement. |
