This table lacks the sophisticated, beautifully executed carving that can be found on Tibetan tables, but has a certain quaint charm of village production. The three main panels of the front consist of a popular motif, that of the Wheel of the Dharma flanked by two deer, which represent the first teachings of Buddha Sakyamuni in the Deer Park at Sarnath, India. A continuous fret pattern is carved around the top, and the whole table is painted a browny-red and gold using rag-dul, a Dutch gold powder.
