This beautiful altar came from a private chapel in Kham, Eastern Tibet. The central section is designed to hold statues of the Buddha and other divinities and the lower niches have painted stands for the images. Snow lions decorate the central, main stand, which are typically found on thrones. Magnificent, carved dragons climb up the sides of the altar and a mythical creature, known as chepac or zipac is carved above the central niche. On either side of the chepac are painted panels with a man offering a long white scaff, known as kata in Tibetan on one side and a peacock on the other side. The frames around the niches are elaborately carved and painted with stylised lotus flowers and pearls, and a finely carved flower and scroll section outlines the main niche. The three lower panels are painted with a golden vase brimming with jewels and a Precious Horse on either side, all on a green background.
