The four Guardians of the four directions are beautifully portrayed on this pair of panels. These Guardians or Protectors are often found in the entrance of a monastery or temple. Each figure has a distintive colour, wears a particular hat and holds a specific implement: from top left going in a clockwise direction: a stupa, a vomiting mongoose, a lyre and a sword.
