These two panels were probably part of a larger set consisting of the 4 Guardians of the directions and other Bardo deities. On the left panel are dipicted two of the Protectors of the four directions. These guardians or protectors are often found in the entrance of a monastery or temple. The top figure is seated on a leopard skin playing a lyre, and the lower figure is seated on a tiger skin holding a banner, which is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols. On the right hand panel are two deities of the Bardo, the Intermediate stage between death and rebirth. They are terrifying and wield weapons, although the lower figure is holding a very tiny hammer indeed. Both panels demonstrate a naïve style that is expressive in its simplicity.
