In the central cartouche a green, blue and orange crane, with outstretched wings and one raised foot, balances on a large blue lotus flower, which typically grows out of a lake. The crane is associated with longevity in Chinese symbolism but most likely the Tibetans admired the bird for its decorative value. Not unusually on Tibetan boxes, the crane has a long phoenix-like tail. Surrounding the bird are other large polychrome lotus flowers. Outside the cartouche, the field is plain cinnabar red with six of the Seven Gems, depicted in gold. The golden scrolls of the corners are executed in kyung bur, the popular raised gesso technique. In the border we find a continuous cloud pattern. |
