| This box shows the typical characteristics of early boxes, originally thought to come from Lhokha, Southern Tibet, which is the region where most of these boxes were found by Tibetan dealers in recent years. The carved scalloped top is typical of these boxes. In the centre are two large lotus blossoms, supporting Sanskrit syllables in the Lantsa script, surrounded by green foliage. In each corner is a green scrolling pattern containing round jewels, which symbolize the dharma, the teachings of the Buddha. The field and border are plain cinnabar red. Painted on wood, with substantial ironwork. |
