This box shows the typical characteristics of early boxes, originally thought to come from Lhokha, Southern Tibet, as that is the region where many of these boxes are found by Tibetan dealers. In this case, the scalloped top is painted rather than carved, the typical flaming jewel is found in the centre of a plain red field, with yellow and green scrolls in the corners and scrolls in the border. The flat wooden top is another characteristic of these boxes.
