The furniture produced in the Eastern Tibetan region of Kham is usually made with more massive structures than those made in Central Tibet, and has bright, bold colours and designs which reflect the character of the people of the region. With the cabinets, particularly, the artists of the day could give free reign to their aesthetic inspiration, without the iconographic constraints of religious art. This cabinet is no exception, with a bold, repetitive, stylized flower design on the central panels. The four drawers have a polychrome flower on a “goose-bump” background made of raised gesso (kyung bur) dots and covered with Dutch gold, known as rag-dul, in Tibetan. The lower panel, is fixed, and is decorated with a flower similar to those found on the drawers. Painted on wood.
