This monkey mask is a representation of the Monkey God Hanuman, a popular ally of Rama in the Hindu epic "The Ramayana". The mask would have been used durning the performances of the Ramayana, in Hindu areas of Nepal. This particular mask is probably a Rajbanshi mask as it has some of the typical characteristics, such as carved, heavy lidded eyes with openings underneath or even on the side, signs of paint and a closed mouth with sculptured teeth. Painted wooden patina.
