This kaden rug is made with vegetable dyes and the finest wool available, known in Tibetan as u-pel, as it came from Central Tibet. It has that special characteristic of Tibetan rugs, that over the years, the wool becomes more and more shiny. The background is dark blue from indigo dye, perhaps with some natural brown wool mixed in. The outside border is the gyanag-chakri, the "Chinese border", with a row of pearls inside. The main field is covered with a popular Tibetan motif, know as "frog print" design, although many experts claim that it is a pattern taken from Central Asian rugs of a flaming pearl. In the centre are three medallions and scrolls mark the corners. Excellent condition.

Wool warp and weft.
Natural dyes.
