This rug would have been used on the seat of an important monk or lama, such that the hairy border would have kept out any drafts while he was sitting in the sometimes drafty monasteries. The central swastika represents steadfastness and stability in ancient Buddhist symbology. There is a floral pattern in each of the corners of the main section, then a series of borders radiating outwards, with plain colours, then white pearls, then a Chinese meander design and finally the hairy blue border.

Wool warp and weft.
Natural dyes.
