This type of carpet is known as a wangden as it comes from the Wangden valley in Tsang province in Southern Tibet. The manner in which these rugs are knotted leads to a distinctive "warp back-face", as the long pile is only tied around warp threads located at the face of the rug. There is said to be a strict code of weaving wangdens that governs design, coloration, proportion and knot count that was passed down from one generation to the other. This particular one has a swastika in the centre, framed by a wide Chinese meander border followed by green and blue squares leading out to the long-pile border. Wool warp and weft. |
