This type of carpet is known as a wangden as it comes from the Wangden valley in Tsang province in Southern Tibet. The manner in which these rugs are knotted leads to a distinctive "warp back-face", as the long pile is only tied around warp threads located at the face of the rug. There is said to be a strict code of weaving wangdens that governs design, coloration, proportion and knot count that was passed down from one generation to the other. This particular one has three medallions in the centre, framed by a pearl border followed by a series of other borders leading out to the long-pile border. |
